Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left Bangladesh with her sister Sheikh Rehana on August 5 after resigning in the face of mass-uprising. She can legally stay in India for 45 days by leaving the country on a diplomatic passport. Her visa expires today, Thursday (September 19). The Interim Government, on the other hand, canceled her diplomatic passport. As a result, there are questions about what is actually going to happen to Sheikh Hasina’s fate.
Recently, a report from the Indian media Zee News states that questions have arisen in the political arena about the law under which Sheikh Hasina will stay in India from tomorrow, Friday (September 20).
The report says that on Tuesday (September 17), a spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs of India said that “there is no possibility” that Sheikh Hasina will be handed over to Bangladesh even though her diplomatic passport has expired.
The report said some political analysts believe that Sheikh Hasina may be given “temporary political asylum” like “the Dalai Lama of Tibetan monk”. As the Bangladesh government canceled Hasina’s diplomatic passport, her stay in India now depends on the country’s decision.
Reported that Bangladesh’s foreign secretary said on Tuesday that “they do not know under which law Sheikh Hasina is staying in India”. Dhaka did not want to know anything about this from India. India can give shelter to anyone it wants.
Prior to recently, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the head of the Interim Government, gave a long interview with the Indian news agency Press Trust of India (PTI). In this interview, he remarked that “it is necessary to return Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh for the justice of the brutality that occurred during the previous government”.
“No one is feeling comfortable in India due to her stay. Because we want her back. What she is saying from there is causing problems. If she had remained silent, we would have forgotten. If she were in her own world, the people would have forgotten about it. But she is staying in India giving various instructions. No one is taking this well,” said Dr. Yunus.
He also said, “We have said quite strongly that she (Sheikh Hasina) should keep quiet. This is unfriendly behavior towards us. She has taken refuge there and is campaigning from there. Not so – she went there the normal way. She went there due to the mass-uprising and public outrage.”
