Abu Sayed murder case: Travel ban issued on ex DIG among 14 others

A Dhaka court on Thursday issued a travel ban on former police officers and 14 others in the murder case of Abu Sayed, a student of Begum Rokeya University, who was killed during the anti-discrimination student movement in Rangpur.

Panel lawyers Roknuzzaman, Shamim Al-Mamun and Rayhan Kabir informed the matter through a press release today.

The accused are former DIG of Rangpur Range Abdul Baten, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Moniruzzaman, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Al Imran Hossain, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Abu Maruf Hossain, Begum Rokeya University Branch Chhatra League President Pamel Barua, Begum Rokeya University Branch Chhatra League President Rafiur Rahman. Asaduzzaman, SI Bibhutibhushan Roy, OC Rabiul Islam, Togar, Babul Hossain and Shamim Mahfuz.

The press release also said that the investigating officer of the case, Police Bureau of Investigation (PIB), Superintendent of Police (SP) Zakir Hossain of Rangpur, applied to the Rangpur Metropolitan Magistrate Court on September 30 seeking a ban on foreign travel of the 14 accused. In view of the application, on Wednesday afternoon, Judge Asaduzzaman issued an order banning the foreign travel of the 14 accused.

According to the press release, the names of 17 people were mentioned in the case filed by Abu Sayed’s elder brother Ramzan Ali as a plaintiff on July 18. Among them former Assistant Sub-Inspector (SSI) of Rangpur Metropolitan Police Amir Ali and Constable Sujon Chandra Roy have already been arrested and the other accused former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abdullah Al Mamun is in jail after being arrested in another case. The remaining 14 accused are yet to be arrested.

Abu Sayed, a 12th batch student of the English department of the university, was shot dead by the police at Gate No. 1 of Begum Rokeya University on July 16. He was one of the coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement.
