Spanish woman filmmaker Isabel Herguera made an animation movie based on “Sultana’s Dream” or “Sultanar Shwapno” written by Begum Rokeya, the pioneer of Bengali women’s awakening. The animated movie will be released in Spain on November 17.

“I went to Delhi in 2012. One day, I took shelter in an art gallery amid heavy rain. There I found ‘Sultana’s Dream’ book. A book was written long ago. It has imagined a different world for women! I was surprised to read the book. I decided that day – I will make a movie about it,” Isabel Herguera told the media.

Isabel Herguera came to India several times for film work and organized workshops with women from different places there. The maker wants to know from them – how relevant is the content of that book written more than 100 years ago. Apart from this, she consulted famous painters from all over the world.

After eight years of research, Isabel started working on “Sultana’s Dream” in 2020. The filmmaker said that the animation movie will be released in Spain on November 17 this year after being shown at various festivals.

The novel written by Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain was first published in 1905 under the title “Sultana’s Dream” in The Indian Ladies’ Magazine of Madras. It was published in pamphlet form in 1908. The novel was first published in Bengal in 1922 as Sultana’s Dream in Motichur 2nd volume.

“El Sueno de la Sultana” took place at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain. The 71st edition of this festival has started from 22 September. The film was screened for the first time at the festival on September 25. It is said to have a song written by Bengali musician Moushumi Bhowmik. It is composed by Tajdir Junayed and sung by Dipannita Acharya. The film was produced by five companies in Spain and Germany. Bengali, English, Hindi, Italian, Spanish, and Basque languages are used in the movie.
