A court in Dhaka on Tuesday placed former member of parliament (MP) Syed Sayedul Haque, also known as Barrister Suman, on a five-day remand in an attempt to murder case.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jakir Hossain passed the order after the police produced the former MP before the court.

Earlier, Mirpur model police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Abdul Halim, also the investigating officer of the case, sought 10 days to quiz Barrister Suman, while the defence filed a petition seeking his bail with the cancellation of the remand prayer.

After the hearing, the court allowed five days for interrogation, rejecting the bail plea.

On 23 September, Ridoy Mia, a Jubo Dal leader, lodged the case with the police station against 50 people, including Suman and some top Awami League leaders, for shooting and injuring him in the city’s Mirpur area on 19 July during the quota reform protests.

Ridoy is a senior vice-president of 10 Hatiain union unit of Jubo Dal in Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj.

Former MP Suman was apprehended by the police from his sister’s house at Mirpur-6 in Dhaka around 1:30am on Tuesday.

Before his arrest, he wrote on his verified Facebook account, “I am going with the police. See you in court. Pray for me, everyone.”

In a video message, posted on his Facebook page, the ex-MP also claimed that he was in Dhaka and did not go anywhere after 5 August. For security reasons, he remained out of public sight.

Suman was elected a lawmaker as an independent candidate from Habiganj-4 in the general election on 7 January.
