The government has appointed five more prosecutors to the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT).

The solicitor wing of the Law and Justice Division issued a gazette notification in this regard on Thursday (October 24), saying the order will come into effect immediately.

Five prosecutors have been appointed as per section 7 (1) of the International Crimes Tribunal Act 1973 to run the cases in the tribunal until further notice, the notification said.

The newly appointed prosecutors are– Supreme Court lawyers SM Moeenul Karim, Md Nure Ershad Siddique, Shaikh Mahdi, Tarek Abdullah and forensic expert Tanveer Hasan Joha.

Among them, Karim and Siddique will enjoy the position and benefits of deputy attorney general and the others except Tanvir Hasan Joha will enjoy the status of assistant attorney general.

A total of 11 legal counsels, including the chief prosecutor, have been appointed to the team.

Earlier, on September 7, the government appointed Supreme Court lawyer Md Tajul Islam, joint convener of Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party), as the chief prosecutor of the tribunal and another five prosecutors.

The prosecutors were Md Mizanul Islam, Gazi Monawar Hussain Tamim, BM Sultan Mahmud, Abdullah Al Noman and Md Saimum Reza Talukdar.

Meanwhile, the reformed International Crimes Tribunal on October 17 issued an arrest warrant for former prime minister Sheikh Hasina in connection with her alleged role in crimes against humanity and genocide during the July-August uprising.

Earlier, 11 prosecutors including the chief prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal resigned on 13 August.
