This year, 67 cases of chikungunya and 11 cases of zika virus have been reported in Bangladesh, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

DGHS Director General Prof Dr Md Abu Zafar disclosed the data during a press conference held on December 02 at the DGHS conference room.

“Among the identified cases, most of the chikungunya and zika virus patients are residents of Dhaka. These cases were detected while diagnosing patients for dengue,” said Dr Abu Zafar.

He further reassured that the fatality rate of zika and chikungunya viruses is relatively low.

“There is no need to panic. The mortality rate for infections from these two viruses is significantly lower compared to dengue,” he added.
