Ex-cop among 7 held while preparing for robbery in Sirajganj

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-12 forces in a drive arrested seven members of a robbery group including a sacked police constable, while they were preparing to commit robbery on the Dhaka-North Bengal highway at Sayedabad intersection area, also the western side of Jamuna Multpurpose bridge in Sirajganj Sadar upazila early Friday.

The arrested are: Md Kamruzzaman, 44, son of late Abdus Salam Munshi of Bijidanga village in Alfadanga thana of Faridpur district and also sacked Constable of Bangladesh Police, Md Jamri Khan, 39, son of late Jahir Uddin of Bamankumar village in Atowary thana in Panchagarh district, Jahurul Haque Sumon, 33, son of Motaleb alias Masud Sheikh of Katakhali Battola village in Goalanda thana in Rajbari district, Mizanur Rahman Mintu, 27, son of Abdul Quader of Dhananjoy village in Rajarhat thana of Kurigram district, Mir Sohel Hossain, 26, son of Mir Nayeb Ali of Kashinathpur village in Modhukhali thana of Faridpur district, Raju, 31, son of Shahidul Islam of Uttar Dewli village in Jhikorgachha thana of Jashore district and Ayub Ali Molla, 52, son of late Aftab Ali Molla of Nakurir Char village in Gopalganj Sadar upazila.

Though, the arrested hailed from different districts of the country, they live in and around Dhaka and have a strong link with robberies, said Dipankar Ghosh, Additional Superintendent of Police and also Company Commander for Sirajganj Camp through a press briefing on Friday.

Dipankar said, RAB-12 forces signaled a microbus to halt near the Sayedabad check post at early morning. But, the microbus tried to manage flee the scene causes doubt to the elite forces. Then, RAB members arrested the seven persons by intercepting the microbus. At that time, RAB forces also recovered handcuffs, fake ID cards, Jackets and some other equipment which were carrying to use in robbery.

During a preliminary interrogation, the arrested confessed that, they were patrolling on the highway as a part of preparation before robbery. Besides, they had been remained engaged in robberies at different places of the highways for long.

RAB members handed the arrested over to police and a case was lodged with the respective police station in this connection.
