The July Martyrs Memorial Foundation organized an event on Friday at the Khulna District Shilpakala Academy Auditorium to distribute financial aid cheques to the families of martyrs from the July-August Movement.

A total of Tk2.9cr was distributed among the families of 58 martyrs from the anti-discrimination student movement across 10 districts of the Khulna division, with each family receiving Tk5 lakh.

Sarjis Alam, general secretary of the July Martyrs Memorial Foundation, said: “The biggest indicator of the current government’s failure will be its inability to prosecute the killers of the martyrs of the July mass movement.”

The event was attended by Khulna Divisional Commissioner Md Firoz Sarkar, Khulna Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Zulfikar Ali Haider, Additional Range DIG Md Hasanuzzaman, and others.

Mir Mahbubur Rahman Snigdha, chief executive officer of the July Martyrs Memorial Foundation, delivered the welcome speech.

During the event, speakers said that the sacrifices of the student movement have given rise to a new Bangladesh. They gave their lives to gift us a new Bangladesh. This is a Bangladesh of determination, resilience, and courage.

They added that the new Bangladesh must be taken forward. The history of this uprising is the fruit of the struggles of the students and the masses of the new Bangladesh.

They pointed out that certain groups tried to divert the movement in a different direction and that efforts to discredit the uprising are still ongoing.

They also said that the aspirations and goals of the students need to be realized. Over the past 15 years, discrimination has been prevalent in every sector. To build a society and a Bangladesh free from discrimination, transparency and accountability in all areas must be ensured.

The program was attended by families of martyrs and the injured from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, government officials, members of the July Martyrs Memorial Foundation, central and district-level coordinators of the movement, and media professionals.
