Demanding the nationalization of independent Ebtedai madrasas, teachers held a sit-in program in the Shahbagh area on Monday.
After an emergency meeting on Monday, the decision regarding the protesting teachers will be conveyed from the Office of the education adviser.
During an on-site visit, it was observed that the independent Ebtedai madrasa teachers were still stationed in front of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Dhaka University. They said that the protests would not cease until their demands were met.
Approximately a hundred yards north of the teachers’ gathering, police were seen maintaining a strong presence in front of the Shahbagh police station. The same scene was witnessed during an on-site visit on Sunday night, although there was a relatively smaller police presence then. However, the police force was reportedly increased in the morning.
Kazi Mokhlesur Rahman, chairman of the Independent Ebtedai Madrasa Nationalization Movement, said: “Yesterday (Sunday), we went to the Secretariat. They informed us that a meeting on our issue would be held on Monday . Based on the outcome of their meeting, we will be informed of their decision.”
When asked about the timing of the decision, he replied: “They did not specify that. They said we would be informed within on Monday However, if our demands are not met, we are not leaving the streets.”
