A court in Rangpur on Friday placed former social welfare minister Nuruzzaman Ahmed on a five-day remand in a case filed for killing a student, Mahmudul Hasan Munna, during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

Rangpur Metropolitan Cognizance Court-3 Judge Debi Rani passed the order after the police produced him before the court this morning.

Kotwali police station Sub-Inspector Mostafizar Rahman, also the investigating officer of the case, sought 15 days to interrogate the ex-minister, while the defence opposed the remand plea, seeking his bail.

After the hearing, the court allowed the IO to quiz Nuruzzaman for five days.

On 29 August last year, Abdul Majid, father of the victim, lodged the case with the court against a number of people. Among them, Nuruzzaman is one of the accused.

The former minister is also accused in at least eight cases in Lalmonirhat following the fall of the Awami League government on 5 August. He faces multiple charges, including assault, murder, and attempt to murder during the movement.

On Thursday night, the police arrested Nuruzzaman from his brother Waheduzzaman’s residence in the Dakghar area of Central Road in Rangpur city.
