National team opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim acknowledged the need to take greater “responsibility” with the bat, as the left-hander continues to fall short of converting promising starts into substantial scores.

Tanzid, who featured in both of Bangladesh’s matches at the ICC Champions Trophy, made run-a-ball knocks of 25 and 24. Despite a healthy strike rate of 100 in his 23-match ODI career, the 24-year-old averages just 21, underlining his inconsistency at the top of the order.

The same trend has followed him in the ongoing Dhaka Premier League (DPL), where he’s representing Legends of Rupganj. Though he has scored three fifties so far, he’s yet to convert any into a three-figure score.

“The first few matches were low-scoring, but we managed to overcome that. I still feel I have more to contribute to the team and I’m working hard to deliver in the upcoming games,” Tanzid told reporters on Sunday at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.

“Every venue plays differently. We all know how Mirpur and BKSP behave, especially in the morning. The first ten overs in Mirpur are tricky and that impacts the batters. BKSP offers better batting conditions, and you’ll notice bigger scores there. I think our top-order did well there,” he added reflecting on the conditions.

When questioned about his inability to build on starts, Tanzid admitted to a lack of responsibility in his game.

“I need to take more responsibility. If I find myself in a similar situation again, I have to step up and improve that part of my game,” he said.

“Starting an innings is tough, and while I’ve been getting off to good starts, I haven’t been able to carry on through the middle overs. That’s where I’ve lacked responsibility, and I’m trying to improve that aspect—even in the DPL. Hopefully, that’ll help me become a better performer going forward,” he explained.

Asked whether the issue is technical or mental, he responded, “It could be both—skill and mindset. I’m working on my skills, but I won’t say exactly which ones (smiles).”

With Rupganj currently placed sixth on the points table, Tanzid is optimistic about the team’s chances in the business end of the competition.

“This is a long tournament, and gaining momentum at the right time is crucial. If we can start strong now, we’ll carry that confidence into the Super League stage. The Eid break helped us refresh. With the balanced side we have, I’m confident we’ll finish well,” he concluded.
