Nasum Ahmed’s unbeaten 13-ball 21 earned Mohammedan Sporting Club a thrilling four-wicket win over Gazi Group Cricketers in their penultimate Super League match in Mirpur on Saturday and also pushed the title race of the ongoing edition of the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) to the final day.
Chasing 237, Mohammedan were struggling at 204-6 in the 47th over before Nasum’s heroic knock, which included one four and two sixes, and Mohammad Saifuddin’s unbeaten 30 off 55 helped them chase the target in the last ball of their innings.
Mohammedan needed 12 off the final over and the equation only got tougher two balls into the Sheikh Parvez Jibon’s over, as Saifuddin first played a dot and then handed over the strike to Nasum with a single.
But the tail-ender then slammed a four through deep square leg, which was followed by a dot and then a six over mid-wicket to level the scores. Nasum took the final run off the last ball as Mohammedan completed a memorable win.
Meanwhile, Mohammedan captain Towhid Hridoy, who played the game after a lengthy suspension saga, made 37 off 54 balls.
The win kept Mohammedan, who are in second position in the table, in the race to win their first DPL title since the 2009-10 season. The title will now be decided in the last round when table-toppers Abahani Limited will vie against Mohammedan in the league deciding match at the same venue on Tuesday.
Abahani is still leading the points table with 26 points after they beat Legends of Rupganj by seven wickets in the day’s other match at BKSP-4.
Mohammedan have 24 points after today’s win and the winner between Abahani versus Mohammedan clash will take the DPL honour this season.
Earlier on the day, Abahani spinner duo Mosaddek Hossain (4-41) and Rakibul Hasan (3-41) shared seven wickets between them as they restricted Legends of Rupganj for 225-9 after they elected to field first.
Abahani’s Parvez Hossain Emon and Jishan Alam then struck 73 and 63 runs respectively as they comfortably reached 226-3 in 37.3 overs to earn their fourth successive victory in the Super League.
Meanwhile, in the day’s other match, Agrani Bank Cricket Club registered a massive 137-run win over Gulshan Cricket Club at BKSP-3.
