Riding on an impressive all-round display from Mosaddek Hossain and a composed unbeaten half-century from Mohammad Mithun, Abahani Limited secured their third successive Dhaka Premier League (DPL) title with a commanding six-wicket win over arch-rivals Mohammedan Sporting Club in their final Super League match at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Tuesday.
After electing to bat, Mohammedan were restricted to 240-7, thanks largely to their spinners. Mosaddek’s tidy spell of 2-39 from 10 overs led the way and was well complemented by economic spells of Mahfuzur Raby and Rakibul Hasan.
Abahani found themselves in trouble at 108-4, but a match-winning unbroken 135-run fifth-wicket partnership between Mosaddek and Mithun guided the Sky Blues to victory with 56 balls to spare. Mosaddek remained unbeaten on 78 off 65 deliveries, while Mithun supported him with a solid 66 not out.
With this win, Abahani finished the league with 28 points and lifted their 24th DPL title. For runners-up Mohammedan, however, the defeat extended their title drought as they last won the league in the 2009–10 season.
Mohammedan, missing skipper Towhid Hridoy due to suspension, made a steady start with openers Rony Talukdar (45) and Tawfiq Khan Tushar (16) putting on 50 runs. However, the innings faltered to 124-4 before Mahmudullah and Ariful Islam added a 90-run stand for the fifth wicket.
Both batters reached 50 but were dismissed in quick succession by Mosaddek, which stalled Mohammedan’s momentum and limited them to a below-par total that Abahani chased down comfortably.
