Shaheen Morol from Gazipur:
The historical Neelkuthi, located at Raniganj in Kapasia upazila of Gazipur, with the sign of British exploitation, is still attracting the visitors.
The installation is exactly located on the west bank of the Shitalakshya River, north of Raniganj Bazar and Raniganj High School. There is still part of a kiln used to make indigo at that time. Indigo was cultivated in the area east of the river.
The Neelkuthi, which is considered as the center of this area is made of iron, wood and terracotta. There is a palanquin and cot of that time, which can still be used. Except some parts of those, all the other parts are intact. People of Chandpur used to cultivate indigo centering the Neelkuthi.
However, this Neelkuthi was not built by the British. It is claimed that, the fort was built by Portuguese commander Antonio de Silva Menzies, covering an area of about 200 acres.
At that time, its location was close to the sea. They called it Banijya Kuthi. About 300 years after the fort was built, the British started using the fort as an indigo house. Today, everyone knows the fort as an indigo house. There is an observation tower. The tower is the only intact structure.
It is said that, there was once an inscription on the inside of this 45-foot-high minaret. There is a Digi (one type of pond or wetland) of the English indigo grower Charlie.
