National Consensus Commission vice-chairman Dr. Ali Riaz has commented that building the future of Bangladesh is not possible by considering only the current situation alone.

He said this at a discussion meeting at the Mother Language Institute in the capital on Sunday afternoon. The discussion was organized on the seven proposals of the Citizen Initiative, Citizen Coalition and Citizen Alliance for reforming the democratic structure of the state.

Stating that an attempt is being made to create a republic in Bangladesh, Ali Riaz said, “An attempt should be made to form a new state by taking responsibility for the martyrs and injured in the July Movement. However, the future of Bangladesh cannot be built by considering the current situation alone.”

He said that autocracy has been established constitutionally.

The Consensus Commission vice-chairman also commented that democracy is not possible by keeping the executive branch in its sole power without making the judiciary independent.

In this regard, he said, “The responsibility of the upper house will be to monitor, and giving it more power may create a conflict with the lower house.”

Ali Riaz also said that political parties are sincere in creating a national charter.
