A Dhaka court on Thursday ordered the seizure of 33 bighas of land and an apartment belonging to former Barguna-1 MP Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu, along with freezing 16 bank accounts, as part of an ongoing Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) investigation.
The order was issued on Thursday (July 3) by Dhaka’s Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Galib following a petition by ACC Deputy Assistant Director Khairul Islam.
According to ACC estimates, the seized assets are valued at Tk 2.37 crore, while the frozen bank accounts contain approximately Tk 10.62 crore. Additionally, a family savings certificate, two fixed deposits, and two vehicles were also frozen.
The ACC alleges that Shambhu amassed illegal wealth worth Tk 5.41 crore inconsistent with his known income sources. Investigators also reported suspicious transactions amounting to Tk 41.93 crore through his 16 bank accounts.
The ACC stated in its petition that Shambhu attempted to transfer his assets, prompting the court to intervene to preserve evidence.
Shambhu, currently in jail, was arrested on November 11 last year in connection with the murder of businessman Abdul Wadud during political unrest in Dhaka’s New Market area.
