A Correspondent, Jashore:
Three members of a family sustained burn injuries in an acid attack at Godkhali Mathbari village under Jhikargacha upazila in Jashore on Thursday night (3 July).
The victims were identified as Rahela Khatun, 48, her son Yanur, 8, and daughter Ripa Khatun, 26. They were rescued and admitted to Jashore 250-Bed General Hospital following the attack.
Rahela’s husband, Jamat Ali, said the accused, Jasim — a domestic worker of Fazlul Haque from nearby Mathpara village — had been proposing a romantic relationship to Ripa for a long time. After being repeatedly rejected, Jasim became enraged. Around 8:00 pm on Thursday, he allegedly threw acid through a window of their house, injuring the three family members.
Hearing their screams, locals rushed to the spot and took the victims to the hospital.
Dr Hasib Al Newaz of Jashore General Hospital said the condition of the child, Yanur, is critical. Rahela and Ripa sustained relatively minor burns and were admitted to the hospital’s general ward after receiving primary treatment.
Sub-Inspector Zakir of Jhikargacha Police Station confirmed the acid attack and said the injured were receiving treatment at the hospital. A police team, including senior officers, visited the scene, and an investigation into the incident is underway.
