Those convicted by the International Crimes Tribunal will not be allowed to contest in elections, said Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman.
He made the remark on Saturday while addressing a debate on what should be done to realise the spirit of the July movement.
The attorney general stated that individuals affiliated with the Awami League can also be brought under the purview of the law. “Despite political differences, all parties are united against the Awami League. The party can be trialed for crimes against humanity,” he said.
Regarding the mob issue, Asaduzzaman said, “This is not a sign of distrust in the judiciary, but an outburst of 17 years of accumulated anger. However, this anger is not justified.”
Remembering the martyrs of the July uprising, he said, “Abu Sayed did not belong to any political party. The martyrs of July were not aligned with any political group. They took to the streets as victims of an autocratic regime. They represented the ordinary citizens.”
