Tangail Correspondent:

Police have arrested three men in connection with the alleged gang rape of a woman who boarded the wrong train in Dhaka after she got off at Tangail Rail Station.

The incident occurred on Friday night in the Gharinda area of the rail station, according to Harun Ur Rashid, officer-in-charge of the Gharinda Railway Police Outpost.

The arrestees have been identified as Dulal Chandra, 28, Shojib Khan, 19, and Rupu Mia, 27. They all hail from Tangail Sadar Thana’s Brahmankushia Sutar Para area.

The three are CNG autorickshaw drivers by trade. They were arrested at their homes on Saturday.

Police official Harun said that the survivor is a resident of Brahmanbaria’s Nasirnagar Upazila and works as a house aide at different homes.

She was headed to Chattogram and came from Nasirnagar to the Dhaka Airport Rail Station on Friday night. She made a mistake and got on the north Bangladesh-bound Drutajan Express there.

She fell asleep on the train. When she woke up, she spoke to other passengers on board, heard she was in Tangail, and realised she had boarded the wrong train.

She disembarked from the train when it arrived at Tangail’s Gharinda Rail Station at 12:30am. The GRP at the station informed police about the matter.

The railway police official added that the GRP police went to Kalihati Upazila’s Salla after receiving news of an accident there. A policeman then asked autorickshaw driver Dulal to put the woman on a Dhaka-bound train.

Dulal then took the young woman to the woods behind the station and raped her. Then, he took her to the home of Rupu Mia in Brahmankushia, near the train station. There, Rupu and Sojib gang raped her.

In the morning, the survivor went to the railway station and informed police about the rape.

The railway police informed the Tangail Police Station, and law enforcers conducted a drive and arrested the three men on Saturday morning.

Tanvir Ahmed, chief of Tangail Police Station, said that the survivor had filed a complaint with the police station. The accused have been arrested and will be presented before the court.

Fatema Rahman Bithi, president of the Tangail district unit of the Chhatra Federation, said that violence against women has increased since the changeover of power on Aug 5.

Such heinous acts are happening due to a lack of enforcement of the law, she said. She issued a demand to the home affairs advisor, calling for rapists to be brought to justice and for them to receive the maximum punishment.
