Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam has said that the entire months of July and August are under heightened alert. However, he stated that he has no knowledge of any specific 11-day ‘special alert’ directive.

He made the remarks to the media on Tuesday (July 29).

Meanwhile, despite the ban on political activities of the Awami League, the party’s leaders and activists may secretly gather to plan acts of violence or attacks, according to concerns raised by the police’s Special Branch (SB). In light of these concerns, the SB has issued a ‘special alert’ for the next 11 days across the country.

The SB fears that from July 29 to August 8, there may be attempts to create chaos in the country through coordinated online and offline campaigns.

On July 28, the SB issued a directive to the heads of various police units, including the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner, City SB, Divisional Deputy Police Commissioners, Special Police Superintendents of Chattogram and Khulna, and all district Superintendents of Police (SPs) across the country.

However, Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury recently told the media that allies of the Awami League are attempting to destabilise the country. He warned that they will be dealt with firmly and that action will be taken against those involved in plotting unrest, both at home and abroad.
