At least two persons were killed by mob beating at Pachthakuri area under Chonagacha union of Sirajganj Sadar upazila on Sunday night.

The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately. Police have detained two individuals in connection with the incident.

Rafiqul Islam, Officer in Charge of Sirajganj Sadar River Police said, the deceased were carrying some cattle with an engine boat through the Jamuna river at night. Sensing the matter, villagers intercepted them and found several cows, which legs were tied up with rope on the boat. Due to the carriers’ suspicious attitude, villagers beat them mercilessly terming them as cattle theft.  As a result, one of the victims died on the spot and another succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital.

On information, police reached to the spot and recovered the bodies. Later, the bodies were sent to Shaheed M Monsur Ali Medical College Morgue for autopsy.

Mokhlesur Rahman, OC of Sirajganj Sadar Police Station said, “Investigation is going on in this connection. Police are trying to discover the details over the incident.”

“Two persons, who were picked up from the spot, are being interrogated to know the real fact, he added.
