Staff Correspondent:
Action has been taken against the members of different forces involved in the July uprising killings. A total of 1,168 police members have been accused in 761 cases across the country in the 11 months since the fall of the government, informed Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) on Monday.
The TIB has commented that beyond some departmental measures, there has been no progress in effective accountability against the police, lack of government will and capacity.
Dr Iftekharuzzaman, executive director of TIB, made these remarks at a press briefing held at its office at Dhanmondi.
TIB senior research fellow Shahzada M Akram said, ”Cases have been filed across the country against those who attacked the students and mass people, incited and ordered for killings. Eighty-seven individuals, including ministers and lawmakers, were arrested in 1,602 cases.”
”There is ‘satisfactory progress’ in the investigation of 70 per cent of the cases, while the investigations of 60-70 murder cases are in the final stages,” he added.
Iftekharuzzaman said the interim government has taken numerous initiatives for reforms but many of them are on an ad hoc basis and have no clear roadmap for implementation.
