Ashraful Islam Joy and Saidul Islam Abir:
Journalists of different print, electronics and online media on Monday staged demonstrations including forming human chain and holding protest rally demanding exemplary punishment to the killers of journalist Asaduzzaman Tuhin. In the same time, they also demanded trial of all journalists’ killing incidents including Sagor-Runi without delay.
The agitating journalists gathered in front of Sirajganj Press Club at Mujib Sarak in the town at around 11:00am and formed a human chain. It was followed by a rally with Harun-or-Khan Hasan, District Correspondent of BSS and a private TV channel in the chair. Saidur Rahman Bachchu, General Secretary of Sirajganj district BNP attended the programmes as chief guest and expressing solidarity with the protest, he said, “No government has become able to ensure safety of journalists in the last years. As a result, journalists are becoming victim of brutality one after another during serving their professional duties. Killings of Sagor-Runi and Tuhin are crucial examples. Killing a professional journalist by hacking in the broad daylight is not only a murder; it’s a strike on all journalists’ society, which will not be tolerated anyway. The past Awami League government was failure to provide fair justice against the journalists’ killers. Now, we will not wait for it. We want immediate exemplary punishment to the killers, who chopped journalist Asaduzzaman Tuhin to dead openly in Gazipur.”
Former General Secretary of Sirajganj Press Club Jakirul Islam Santu, its incumbent General Secretary Shariful Islam Inna, Vice-President Hirok Goon, Executive Member Nurul Islam Babu, former convener Abdul Quddus, journalist Tafiz Uddin, Ferdaus Robin, Helal Ahmed, Dileep Gour, Humayun Kabir Sumon, Sohag Hasan Joy, Ashraful Islam Joy and political personality Nabo Kumar among others were also present at the events.
