Flood fear looms in Ishwardi as Padma keeps swelling

Ishwardi dwellers are in fear of flash floods as the water of mighty river Padma near Hardinge Bridge has attempted to cross its danger level.

As a result, many croplands, low laying areas and tributaries of the Padma river have been inundated.

Sources said that, the water of Padma river has started to enter into different villages including Dhapari, Arambaria and Islampur after overflowing the embankment.

Meanwhile, hundreds acres of banana field has gone under water. On the other hand, many crops including vegetable fields have been submerged with flood water causing huge damage.

Due to submerge of the pasture land, there has been created extreme crisis of cattle feeds. Farmers in the area are facing immense sufferings with their animals for want of fodders. Taking the opportunity, a section of traders have been increased the prices of cattle feeds with the aim to make money overnight.

During a spot visit to Hardinge Bridge area, this correspondent found that, most of the girders of the bridge have gone under water. Due to rising of water, makeshift shops, tea stalls and restaurants established beneath the Hardinge Bridge, have started shifting to safer places.

Monowara Khatun, a Fuchka trader told The Daily Sky that, “I have shifted my shop to elsewhere as the water has inundated my previous place. Now visitors have stopped coming to my shop due to flooding. If the trend of water rising continues, whole of the area beneath of the Hardinge bridge will be inundated shortly.

Abul Hossain, a visitor said, “There was no water except only Char few days ago. But now, it has been flooded with Padma water.”

Harifun Nayeem Ibn Salam, Water Reader of Water Development Board in Ishwardi of Pabna district said, “Water of Padma is increasing abnormally due to incessant rains and onrush of water from upstream. If the rain is continued for next few days, Ishwardi dwellers may experience a severe flood.”
