‘Call for new tech to boost fish production’

Additional Divisional Commissioner (general) of Khulna Md Hussain Shawkat on Monday (Aug 18) in his speech said to keep the tradition of Bangalee as enriched with fishes and rice, he urged the scientists and researchers to innovate new variety of technology like agriculture to boost fish production in the country. He urged all to make fish cultivation as a social movement as it could be very successful and effective weapon for poverty alleviation.

“As the fisheries sector has been meeting 80 percent demands of the total animal protein, there is no alternative to fish production in large scale through best use of the existing water bodies,” Hussain Sawkat added.

Additional Commissioner Huassin Sawkat stressed that the indigenous fishes are disappearing day by day due to various reasons including use of excessive pesticide in the agricultural lands, use of banned current net in the water bodies, want of fish sanctuaries and bad impact of climate change. In this context, he urged the fish scientists, researchers and other concerned to invent sustainable methods for fish cultivation by adopting with the changed environment and situation.

Additional Divisional Commissioner Hussain Sawkat made this call as the chief guest on the inaugural session of National Fisheries Week-2025. Khulna District Fisheries Office with the help of local administration have been organizing the fisheries week as aims at creating mass awareness about expansion of fish cultivation.

The inaugural ceremony was held at the conference room of DC Office, Khulna under Sadar police station in the city with Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Khulna Mohammad Saiful Islam in the chair. Director of Department of Fisheries, Khulna division Md Jahangir Alam was present as special guest. District Fisheries Officer of Khulna Md Badruzzaman delivered the address of welcome. Member Secretary of Khulna Press Club Rafiul Islam Tutul, shrimp farmer Md Abu Hasan, among others, spoke on the occasion.

Earlier, on the occasion, a colourful procession led by Additional Divisional Commissioner (general) Hussain Shawkat was brought out from Shaheed Hadis Park that paraded the main city streets and ended in front of DC office.

District level officials, civil society members, NGO representatives, city elites, local journalists, poultry and fish feed owners’ association members and a number of people related to fishing and fishermen attended the function. In the morning, he released different species of fish fries in Shaheed Hadis Park pond situated at heart of the city.
