The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has been abolished and replaced with two separate divisions through an ordinance approved by the interim government on Thursday.
The Advisory Council of the government approved the draft of ‘Revenue Policy and Revenue Management (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, that abolished the central authority for tax administration and formed two separate divisions.
The approval was given during the 39th meeting of the council held at the Chief Adviser’s Office (CAO) in Dhaka this noon with Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus in the chair.
The two new divisions are the Revenue Policy Division and the Revenue Management Division.
The restructuring was done with an aim to modernise tax administration and improve revenue collection by separating policy formulation from revenue management.
On 12 May, an ordinance was issued to abolish the NBR and divide it into two departments, Revenue Policy and Revenue Management.
Since then, NBR officials and employees have been protesting for about a month and a half, demanding rational reforms based on the opinions of all parties.
