Water Resources Minister and former Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) president Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee on Thursday said that the current state of student politics is not being accepted by the new generation, urging a detailed parliamentary discussion on the issue.

He made these remarks while participating in the debate on the presidential address in the Jatiya Sangsad.

The minister said it is necessary to hold in-depth discussions in parliament on the nature of student politics in the country. “The student politics we are witnessing, especially over the last two to three days, is not being liked by this generation,” he said.

He added that remnants of “fascist-era politics” were still influencing student organisations. “There are allegations of involvement with sharp arms like machetes, rods and hockey sticks. After August 5, such politics should not continue to pollute student spaces,” he said.

The minister further suggested that, similar to the energy crisis, student politics should also be discussed in parliament to take appropriate measures.

Referring to the last national election, he alleged that excessive money was spent during the polls. “We could not understand where so much money came from,” he said, adding that questions have been raised regarding Islami Bank and its financial flow over the past one and a half years.

He also stressed the need for stricter enforcement of election expenditure rules, questioning discrepancies between declared and actual spending during elections.
