Shahjadpur PIO Azad arrested in graft case

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has arrested Shahjadpur Upazila Project Implementation Officer (PIO) Abul Kalam Azad in Sirajganj in a corruption case.

ACC sources said that, in 2023, the ACC launched an investigation against Abul Kalam Azad on charges of acquiring illegal assets beyond known income.

Later, on May 8, 2024, an order was issued to submit wealth statements of Abul Kalam Azad, his wife Marjina Khatun and son Fazle Rabbi Rion.

In view of this, Abul Kalam Azad and his family members submitted wealth statements to the ACC on July 3.

Later, on March 11, 2025, ACC Assistant Director Sadhan Chandra Sutradhar filed three separate cases as the plaintiff on charges of acquiring assets beyond known income and concealing information about the assets.

According to the information in that case, PIO Abul Kalam Azad has acquired illegal assets worth about Tk 13.246 crore, which is a punishable offense under Sections 26(2) and 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004.

His wife Marjina Khatun also acquired and possessed assets worth about Tk 1.57 crore from her husband’s illegal income, which directly aids in acquiring illegal assets beyond known income, an offense punishable under Section 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004 and Section 109 of the Penal Code.

On the other hand, son Fazle Rabbi Rion was charged with illegally acquiring assets worth about Tk 1.15 crore belonging to his father. On Sunday (May 3) night, an ACC team arrested PIO Abul Kalam Azad during a raid at his house in Pabna Sadar Upazila.

It is learned that, PIO Abul Kalam Azad is currently working in Shahjadpur Upazila. The operation was conducted on the basis of a corruption case filed against him. After the arrest, he was handed over to the court after the legal process, and the court ordered him to be sent to jail.

Sadhan Chandra Sutradhar, Assistant Director of the Pabna Office of the Anti-Corruption Commission said on mobile phone that, PIO Abul Kalam Azad was arrested in a raid at his residence in Pabna Sadar on Sunday (May 3) night. After the arrest, he was sent to jail through the court.
