Leicester City extended their fine home form in the Championship with a 2–0 victory over Birmingham City at the King Power Stadium on Friday night, but the win was overshadowed by an injury scare for Bangladeshi midfielder Hamza Choudhury.
The Foxes struck early as Abdul Fatawu opened the scoring inside eight minutes, latching onto Louis Page’s pass before confidently firing past Ryan Allsop. Leicester controlled much of the first half, with Birmingham forced to chase the game after the early setback.
After the interval, the visitors came close to equalising when Kyogo Furuhashi’s volley whistled over the bar following a corner. However, Marti Cifuentes’ side wrapped up the points late on when Ricardo Pereira guided home a Jeremy Monga cross in the 88th minute.
For Hamza, who started at the right back as the team captain, the evening was more frustrating. The 27-year-old picked up a knock to his leg in the 69th minute after a collision with Keshi Anderson. He appeared to be limping before being replaced by Ricardo Pereira. Earlier, Hamza had impressed with one key clearances, one interception and three tackles, though he was also booked shortly before half-time for a strong tackle.
Neither Leicester nor English media provided an immediate update on the extent of his injury.
However, the Bangladesh international later reassured fans on Facebook, posting pictures from the match and writing, “Great way to finish before the break. We’re building but the desire and fight was there for everyone to see.”
His words may ease concerns for Bangladesh supporters ahead of next month’s FIFA international window, when he is expected to feature in two friendlies against Nepal in Kathmandu on 6 and 9 September.
After the international break, Hamza’s Leicester City will take on Oxford United on 13 September in the fifth round of Championship.
