A traffic police was killed after run over by a speeding and reckless truck at the western side of Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge on the Dhaka-North Bengal highway in Sirajganj district on Tuesday afternoon.
The deceased was Nurul Islam, Assistant Traffic Sub-Inspector (ATSI) of Sirajganj Traffic Police and also son of late Afsar Ali of Bohail village in Shahzahanpur upazila of Bogura district.
Police and eyewitnesses said, the accident took place at around 3:45pm, when a Dhaka bound speeding truck lost control over the steering and run over the on duty traffic police-Nurul, while trying to overtake another vehicle from wrong side. The ill-fated traffic officer died on the spot. In the incident, driver of the truck name Tabibur Rahman, son of late Siraj Uddin of Panchagarh district was injured. He was also admitted to Sirajganj Medical College Hospital.
Police recovered the body and sent it to the mentioned hospital morgue for autopsy.
Amirul Islam, Officer in Charge of Jamuna Bridge Western PS said, the body will be handed over to his family members after completion of formalities. Besides, action would be taken against the injured driver, who was shown arrested in this case after his necessary treatment.
Traffic Inspector (Administration) Mofakhkharul Islam said, “We are shocked by this incident. Sirajganj District Police and Traffic Police express their condolences over this incident.”
