2 get life term in Sirajganj for killing physician

A court in Sirajganj on Wednesday sentenced two persons to life term imprisonment for killing a physician after about 15 years of the incident.

The court also fined them Tk 1 lakh each; in default, they will have to serve six more months in jail.

The convicts are Jakariya Masud, 43, son of Jel Haque of Janpur area in the town and also sale representative of a Medicine Company, and Anwar Hossain Kiron, 45, son of Abul Hossain of Khaga village in Sirajganj Sadar upazila.

Begum Laila Sharmin, Judge of Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-1 in Sirajganj delivered the verdict at noon.

Shamsuzzoha Shahanshah, Additonal Public Prosecutor of the court said, during the verdict, Anwar Hossain Kiron was present at the court. But, arrest warrant was issued against another accused Jakariya Masud as he was absconding.

According to the prosecution brief, on April 15, 2011, Dr Baki Mirza, brother of late Awami League leader Abdul Latif Mirza was brutally killed by hacking after tying his hands and legs with the rope in a room of the government dormitory near court building.

After the incident, Abdul Latif Mirza, brother of the victim filed a case with Sirajganj Sadar police station in this connection.

Investigation Officer (IO) submitted charge sheet to the court on February 20, 2012, accusing three persons.

On the other hand, as another accused Dr Abdul Latif lodged a revision to the High Court, the respective court did not make any decision regarding him due to High Court’s status quo.
