A rare 22.6 kg Dhai fish was caught in the Padma River near Daulatdia, Gopalganj, Rajbari, and sold for Tk 1,04,000 on Thursday through an open auction at the local fish market.
Fisherman Jibon Haldar and his team, who were fishing in the Char Karneshna Kalabagan area of the Padma in the early hours, managed to trap the giant fish in their net. They brought it to the Anu Khan fish market stall at Daulatdia, where it was auctioned at Tk 4,600 per kilogram, fetching a total of Tk 1,03,960.
Local fish trader Shajahan Sheikh, who purchased the fish, said, “This fish is known for its delicious taste and high demand, which explains its substantial price.”
District Fisheries Officer Nazmul Huda described the catch as highly unusual. “Dhai fish of this size from the Padma River is extremely rare. Such catches are uncommon, making it highly valuable. The fish is in strong demand in Dhaka and other regions, benefiting the fishermen with a good sale,” he said.
