Six get life term in drug case in Sirajganj

A court in Sirajganj on Monday sentenced six persons to life term imprisonment in a case filed for drug peddling.

The court also fined them Tk 1 lakh each, in default; they will have to serve one more year in Jail.

Nazrul Islam, Judge of Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-3 in Sirajganj handed down the verdict.

The convicted are Osman Gani and Gofran Ali of Jaygirpara, Md Alef Ali of Muktarpur, Manik Mian of Gourshahorpur, Anis of Biraldaho and Md Rajib of Shekher Char area in Rajshahi district.

Hamidul Islam Dulal, APP of the court said, accused Rajib, Gofran and Alef were present before the court during announcement of verdict, but remaining three others were absconding.

According to the prosecution brief, on the basis of secret information, a team of Jamuna Bridge Western Thana police set up a makeshift check-post near the roundabout and conducted searching operation on July 15, 2012. At one stage of the operation, police recovered 150 bottles of Indian Phensedyl from a private care after conducting a massive search. At that time, police also arrested Osman Gani, Gofran and Rajib in this connection.

Later, the arrested confessed that, three more persons were also involved with their drug dealings. Police lodged a case with the respective police station in this connection accusing the six persons.

On December 31, 2012, Investigation Officer (IO) submitted charge sheet to the court accusing the six persons.
