The ICT Division, in a statement on Sunday, announced that under the newly enacted Cyber Security Ordinance 2025, online gambling has been declared a criminal offense, with penalties including fines of up to Tk1 crore.
The ordinance specifically targets anyone involved in creating, operating, or participating in online gambling activities within cyberspace. Those who assist or promote online gambling, including through advertisements, will be considered guilty of the offense. Punishments can include imprisonment for up to two years, a fine of up to Tk1 crore, or both.
Alongside online gambling, the ordinance also covers cyber fraud. Individuals found guilty of using cyberspace for fraudulent activities will face similar penalties, including up to two years of imprisonment or fines of up to Tk20 lakh, or both.
A more severe penalty applies to those committing fraud through cyberspace that causes significant harm or loss. Such individuals will face imprisonment of up to five years or a fine of up to Tk50 lakh, or both.
The ordinance is aimed at curbing the rising issues of cybercrime, and law enforcement agencies have increased their surveillance to prevent such offenses. The interim government has urged the public to stay alert and help in ensuring cyber security, as these measures are designed to protect individuals and the nation from online threats and fraud.
