Police Headquarters on Friday urged the public to remain vigilant against what it described as false, misleading and malicious propaganda targeting senior police officials and other key state functionaries on social media.

In a statement, Police Headquarters said a group had recently been spreading fabricated, provocative and misleading content about senior Bangladesh Police officials and other important government figures through Facebook and other social media platforms.

It strongly condemned what it termed the smear campaign.

According to the statement, the authorities believe the propaganda is being carried out by “fallen fascist forces” and their domestic and foreign collaborators with the aim of creating public confusion, destabilising the law and order situation, weakening the morale of the police force and damaging the government’s image.

The statement said Bangladesh Police is currently taking legal action against the activities of a banned political party.

It also alleged that another group, dissatisfied because the police refused to entertain improper lobbying, had been spreading fabricated information.

Police Headquarters further claimed it has evidence linking those involved in the alleged propaganda to various criminal activities, unethical lobbying at government offices and attempts to demand money in exchange for halting the smear campaign.

The police urged the public not to believe, share or circulate misleading and provocative content and called on citizens to play a responsible role in preventing rumours and misinformation.

It also warned that strict legal action would be taken against those involved if such activities continue.

The statement added that Bangladesh Police remains committed to maintaining law and order, ensuring public safety and performing its duties professionally while preserving public trust.
