Nine-day US visit will mark his first UNGA appearance and address as prime minister

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will visit New York on 21 September to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

This will be his first participation in and address to the global forum as head of government.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has formally informed the US Embassy in Dhaka of the prime minister’s visit through a note verbale.

Officials familiar with the matter said preparations have already begun for the prime minister’s nine-day visit.

During his stay in New York, Tarique Rahman is expected to address the UN General Assembly and attend several high-level meetings and events organised on the sidelines of the session.

Following his New York visit, the prime minister is expected to travel to San Francisco, where he will attend an interaction with expatriate Bangladeshis.

Tarique Rahman’s visit to the United States will be his third overseas trip since forming the government in February this year. He previously visited Malaysia on his first foreign trip as prime minister and later travelled to China.
