Police arrested two suspected drug traffickers along with a massive consignment of narcotics during a drive in Sirajganj.

A total of 4.33 kg of heroin and 58 vials of injectable drugs were seized during the operation conducted at the West Toll Plaza of the Bangabandhu Bridge early Monday (August 24). Police also impounded a truck used for transporting the illegal consignment.

The arrestees were identified as truck driver Md. Abu Bakkar, 44, and his assistant Md. Mohan Ali , 31. The estimated market value of the seized heroin is around Tk 4 crore.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Md. Saiful Islam Santu disclosed the information during a press conference at his office on Monday.

The SP stated that, acting on a tip-off, a team from the district police set up a temporary check-post on the Dhaka-North Bengal highway in front of the Jamuna Bridge toll plaza at around 1:00 AM. Upon searching a suspicious truck, officers recovered the heroin and drug vials, which had been concealed inside the vehicle making a special compartment.

Police confirmed that, a case under the Narcotics Control Act is currently being processed against the duo.

Driver Abu Bakkar already faces a prior narcotics charge at Darus Salam Police Station in Dhaka. Police reaffirmed that, strict operations under a “zero tolerance” policy against illegal drugs will continue across the district.
