Entertainment Desk:
From the silver screens of Bengali cinema to the dazzling world of Bollywood, Vidya Balan has continually embraced new challenges with grace and determination.
Now, the acclaimed actress is reportedly preparing to make her long-awaited debut in South Indian cinema, a fresh chapter in her illustrious career.
Vidya’s cinematic journey began in 2003 with ‘Bhalo Theko’, directed by Gautam Haldar and based on Rabindranath Tagore’s timeless story ‘Nashtaneer’.
The film not only marked her first appearance on screen but also revealed her deep passion and commitment to the craft of acting. While her performance earned admiration from Bengali audiences, national recognition was yet to come.
That breakthrough arrived in 2005 with ‘Parineeta’, directed by Pradeep Sarkar. Vidya’s heartfelt portrayal of Lalita captivated critics and audiences alike, establishing her as a complete performer overnight. Her combination of emotional depth and natural beauty brought a refreshing authenticity to Bollywood, making Parineeta a defining moment in her career.
Now, two decades on, Vidya is reportedly set to make her full-fledged South Indian debut with ‘Jailer 2’, a Tamil-language film directed by Nelson Dilipkumar.
Industry sources suggest she will portray the elder daughter of Mithun Chakraborty’s character, with Mithun himself cast as the film’s antagonist.
Superstar Rajinikanth is also said to play a central role, though it remains unclear whether Vidya will share screen space with him directly.
What makes this development particularly intriguing is that, despite being a native of Kerala, Vidya has never regularly worked in South Indian cinema. Apart from a brief cameo in ‘Nerkonda Paarvai’ (2019), Jailer 2 will mark her first substantial foray into the southern film industry.
The movie is currently being filmed in Chennai, with additional schedules planned for Goa and post-production expected to begin early next year.
Jailer 2 is slated to hit cinemas on June 12, 2026.
