For the first time in Bangladesh’s electoral history, members of the Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Party (VDP) will be deployed to ensure the security of presiding officers during the upcoming national elections.

“This is the first time that we are deploying one Ansar member with a firearm for the security of presiding officers,” Home Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said on Tuesday.

Addressing the media after attending the inauguration of the Bangladesh Ansar Welfare Trust’s Transport Service at its headquarters, Jahangir said that 13 Ansar personnel will be assigned to each polling centre during the election.

“Of these 13 members, three will carry arms while the remaining 10 will serve in a supportive security capacity, ensuring a comprehensive security arrangement,” he said.

“Out of 10 Ansar members, six will be male and four others female,” Jahangir added.

He said that the deployment of Ansar personnel will ensure the smooth conduct of the elections, as they will be engaged for a total of nine days during the polling period, playing a crucial role in maintaining order.

“Ansar and VDP forces will have the most significant contribution during this election. Their presence will be essential to creating a safe and peaceful environment for voters and election officials alike,” he said.

The adviser also spoke about the recovery of illegal weapons ahead of the election, reassuring the public that operations to confiscate arms would continue in the coming days.

Jahangir explained that while weapons have been regularly recovered, their numbers are expected to increase as election day nears.

“Illegal weapons will not have the opportunity to be used during the election,” he emphasised, noting that law enforcement agencies are intensifying their efforts to prevent any disruptions during the polls.

The adviser also highlighted the critical role Ansar has been playing in maintaining law and order across the country. “The Bangladesh Ansar and VDP has always been instrumental in the security of our nation. They serve with dedication and commitment, providing security and peace in the most challenging situations,” he remarked.

Additionally, Jahangir Alam commended the Bangladesh Ansar Welfare Trust for its efforts in enhancing the well-being of its members.

He spoke about the newly launched transport service aimed at easing the mobility of Ansar personnel, which includes 31 new vehicles funded by the trust. These vehicles, comprising carriers, large buses, mini-buses, and ambulances, will not only assist in transportation for the force but will also improve emergency medical responses.

“Providing these transport services is a vital initiative to ease the travel-related difficulties our Ansar members often face. This will undoubtedly improve their efficiency and morale, contributing significantly to their service,” the adviser added.
