Bangladesh Police have started distributing new uniforms, initially to a limited number of personnel.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Deputy Commissioner (Media) Talebur Rahman said the rollout began on Saturday and will be completed in several phases.

Metropolitan police members are receiving the first batch of uniforms, though on a limited scale. Both range and metropolitan units will adopt the new iron-grey attire, replacing the previous blue and green uniforms.

Mohammadpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kazi Rafique Ahmed said they had not yet received the new uniforms but expected to get them soon.

The interim government had approved the updated uniform following widespread calls for police reform after last year’s political changeover following the July Uprising.

Earlier, it was announced that the long-awaited uniforms would be distributed this month across metropolitan and specialised units.

Personnel from metropolitan forces such as the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP), along with specialised units including the Highway Police, River Police, and Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), will be the first to adopt the redesigned attire.

Initially, all metropolitan and specialised units will begin wearing them, while range and district police will follow gradually.

The decision to update the uniform colours of the Bangladesh Police, Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Party (VDP), and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) was approved on 20 January, as part of a broader reform initiative following the uprising.

The change aims to give the force a refreshed identity, symbolising modernisation and accountability.
