Police have arrested Jarejul Islam, friend of Ashraful Haque after Ashraful’s body cut into 26 pieces was found inside two plastic drums in front of the National Eidgah in Dhaka.

The DMP said on Friday night Jarejul was arrested from Daudkandi in Cumilla.

According to the DMP, Ashraful was killed because of an extramarital affair and the main suspect of the murder Jarejul is arrested.

RAB-3 said they had also arrested Shamima, Jarejul’s girlfriend as another suspect in the case with “different pieces of evidence”.

But they did not mention from where she was arrested.

On Thursday evening police found two blue drums near the High Court gate by the National Eidgah. When they opened the drums, they discovered Ashraful’s body parts wrapped in black polythene.

Police confirmed Ashraful’s identity through fingerprints.

The deceased is from Nayapara village in Gopalpur Union of Badarganj, Rangpur.

Ashraful’s younger sister, Mst Anjira Begum filed a case at Shahbagh Police Station on Friday claiming Jarejul as the main accused.

The Shahbag Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Khalid Monsur said, “We are investigating the case. An operation is underway to arrest the accused.”

According to the case statement, Ashraful supplied onions, garlic, chilies and potatoes across the country from Hili land port in Dinajpur.

On 11 November at around 8pm he came to Dhaka with his friend Jarejul.

The statement says, “After that my brother’s phone was switched off. We suspect Jarejul and others planned the murder and killed him with a sharp weapon.”

The statement further says, “The killers cut Ashraful’s body into 26 pieces, put them in two blue drums, covered the drums with black lids and fled the scene.”

Earlier on Thursday evening, police recovered two blue drums from in front of the National Eidgah. After opening the drums, the dismembered body of Ashraful Haque was found.

The dismembered parts of the body were wrapped in black polythene and rice was placed inside the drums.
