A journalist filed a case accusing 19 people of assaulting him on Thursday night while he was covering Gazaria upazila parishad elections held on May 8.
The attackers are supporters of the immediate past chairman of the upazila parishad, according to the case statement.
The victim, Golzar Hossain, Munshiganj correspondent of The Daily ManabZamin, filed the case at 11:00pm on Thursday.
The main accused in the case is Hossendi union parishad chairman Monirul Haque Mithu.
Golzar Hossain said that UP chairman Monirul Haque Mithu attacked him when he was recording the incident of Mithu and his supporters beating up a member of the police outside the polling centre.
He said that Mithu was a supporter of Md Amirul Islam, the immediate past upazila parishad chairman.
According to the case statement, UP chairman Mithu gathered with more than a hundred people to occupy the Bhabanipur Government Primary School polling station on May 8 at about 9:00am.
As police constable Sohel Rana asked everyone to go away, Mithu’s men started beating Sohel.
Golzar was recording the scene on his mobile phone.
At that time, they took away journalist Golzar’s mobile phone, money from his wallet, his identity card and journalists’ observation card and started beating him.
With the help of some journalists, Golzar was rescued from the scene and admitted to Gazaria Upazila Health Complex.
