JAMALPUR CORRESPONDENT:

A Jamalpur court today sentenced four people to death for strangulating driver Laiju Mia after stealing his easybike in Sarishabari of the district. At the same time, each has been fined Tk 50,000.

Judge Muhammad Anwar Chadat of Additional District and Sessions Judge-2 announced this verdict in the presence of the two accused who received the death penalty on Sunday (June 9) afternoon.

The convicted accused are – Md. Moni Taheri, Md. Rubel Mia, Md. Zakir Hossain, and Sohag, hailed from Sarishabari upazila. Among them, Sohag and Zakir Hossain are absconding.

The State lawyer said that after stealing an easybike in Sarishabari on 1 October 2016, the accused strangled the driver Laiju Mia to death. In this incident, the victim’s father filed a murder case with the Sarishabari police station. Police arrested Rubel Mia and Moni Taher on suspicion. Later, the accused gave a confessional statement under section 164 and narrated the incident.

Additional lawyer for the State Md. Shafiqul Islam Akkas said that the court gave this verdict on Sunday after the testimony of 17 witnesses in the case.
