A village in Sirajganj town gets new name ‘Iqbalpur’ from the oldest name ‘Khichuripara’.

On this occasion, with the initiative of local BNP, a name plaque was inaugurated at the entrance of the village adjacent to Mirpur WAPDA Dam in Sirajganj town on Thursday (October 23) noon.

Former General Secretary of the town BNP and Joint General Secretary of the district BNP Munshi Zahed Alam attended as chief guest at the event, while General Secretary of the Sirajganj District Jubo Dal Muraduzzaman Murad and General Secretary of the district Mohila Dal Elema Begum were present as special guests. Leaders and activists of BNP and allied organizations were also present at the event.

Locals said that, when many areas including Sirajganj were affected by river erosion during the terrible flood of 1988, former State Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku took initiative to rehabilitate the affected people. At that time, many families took shelter in that nameless village with his assistance. As a sign of gratitude, the asylum takers named the village “Iqbalpur”, although it has not yet been recognized by the local administration.

Speaking at the name plaque inauguration ceremony, Munshi Zahed Alam said, “This village has been named after our BNP leader Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku. He has instructed us to stand by the people of Iqbalpur. In the future, if BNP comes to power, this village will be transformed into a model village. Improved roads, education and social infrastructure will be ensured.”

Leaders of various BNP affiliates and locals from Wards 13, 14 and 15 were also present during the inauguration of name plaque.

Munshi Zahed Alam told The Daily Sky that, “We will take necessary steps in future after talking to the authorities of Sirajganj municipality over the issue. Besides, we will talk about the matter with local administration to use the name in papers.”
