The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Sunday (July 27) interrogated economist Abul Barkat, former chairman of Janata Bank, in connection with a Tk297 crore loan scam case.

A team led by ACC Assistant Director Shahjahan Miraz brought Barkat from the central jail to the commission’s headquarters in the capital’s Segunbagicha at 1:45pm for the first day of his two-day remand, according to ACC officials.

On 23 July, the ACC sought a three-day remand for Barkat in the case. The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka granted a two-day remand instead.

The case involves the misappropriation of over Tk297 crore in loans sanctioned in the name of the business group ‘Annontex’.

In February this year, the ACC filed the case against 23 individuals, including Barkat and former Bangladesh Bank governor Atiur Rahman.

Barkat was arrested from his Dhanmondi residence on 10 July by detectives of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police and was later produced before the court.
