The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case against former lawmaker Abdus Sobhan Mia, also known as Golap, over allegations of amassing vast wealth beyond his known income, including luxury properties in New York worth around Tk320 crore.
ACC Director General (Prevention) Akhtar Hossain confirmed the development on Wednesday.
According to the case statement, the former Madaripur-3 MP allegedly owns nine apartments and houses in Queens, New York, valued at approximately Tk320 crore, around $40 million as per an OCCRP report.
Factoring in other immovable assets, his total wealth stands at Tk693.76 crore, the report said.
His legally recognized income, however, is only Tk14.4 crore, leaving an unexplained discrepancy of Tk683.27 crore, as per the report, raising serious concerns about the source of his fortune.
The ACC investigation further uncovered suspicious transactions amounting to Tk976.32 crore across 51 bank accounts linked to Golap.
The commission suspects these funds may have been laundered or acquired through illicit means, as mentioned in the report.
