TDS Desk:

Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on Friday described the gas leak at a shipbreaking yard in Sitakunda as a “very tragic accident” and said necessary action would be taken based on the findings of an investigation.

So far, eight bodies have been brought to Chattogram Medical College Hospital following the explosion at Ferdous Steel Ship Breaking Yard while a ship was being cut. Several people were also injured in the incident.

The minister visited the hospital in the afternoon to inquire about the condition of the injured and offer condolences to the families of the deceased.

“Eight bodies have so far arrived at the medical college. We have not yet received information about the others,” he said.

Amir Khosru said an investigation committee would be formed and the necessary measures would be taken based on its report.

“There is no question of taking anyone’s side. It is the government’s responsibility to investigate and find out the correct facts and take all necessary measures accordingly,” he said.

The minister said it would be premature to comment on the cause of the accident before the investigation is completed.

He also said the Bangladesh Ship Breakers and Recyclers Association would provide Tk10 lakh to each family of the deceased, while the government would also provide assistance.

The minister said a gas leak was still continuing at the site after the explosion and an Army explosives team had been sent there to bring the situation under control.

He said controlling a gas explosion was difficult and the Army was working to contain the situation.

Amir Khosru said the government was placing importance on compliance with green yard standards in the shipbreaking industry and inspections were being carried out in this regard.

He said, “Green yard certification is issued after meeting the specific criteria under the Hong Kong Convention. However, the authorities will investigate whether there has been any compliance gaps or negligence.”

“If the accident occurred due to negligence, action will be taken,” he said.
