Entertainment Desk:
National Film Award-winning actress Sadika Parvin Popy has been absent from films for a considerable amount of time. In February, she came under the spotlight again when she appeared publicly with her husband and child. News of her marriage and motherhood became known after a general diary (GD) was filed at the police station over a family land dispute.
At present, the celebrated actress is spending days with her family. On Wednesday is her 46th birthday. “When I was working regularly in films, my birthday felt like a festival. Fans would come all day, call me and some would send cakes and flowers. Sometimes my birthday was spent on shooting sets. Fan clubs across the country arranged different celebrations. Now my birthday will be spent in a homely way. I have arranged for Qur’an recitation mahfils and food distribution in some orphanages,” Popy told regarding her birthday plans.
Reflecting on her life’s experiences, she added, “One must take responsibility for family, but it is not right to give away everything to everyone without strengthening your own foundation. Once I thought everyone was close to me. Later I realized that is not true.”
During her difficult times, some people from the film industry and her husband, Adnan, supported her, the actress proclaimed.
It is reported that shooting for Popy’s film ‘Kathgoray Sarat Chandra’ may resume. However, she is still uncertain about returning to acting. In her words, “It is not possible to say anything now. For the time being, I am not acting; I’m busy with family life.”
But soon her film, ‘Direct Action’, is set to be released. Directed by Sadek Siddiki, the film was shot in 2019 and received censor board clearance in 2021. The film, based on plotlines protesting social injustices, Popy plays the role of a police officer opposite Amin Khan. Her last released film was ‘The Director’ (2019).
In 2020, she signed another film titled ‘Dhoa’ (Smoke), but shooting never began. After remaining in seclusion, Popy reappeared before fans in 2022, during the Film Artistes’ Association elections, through a video message in which she simply said, “If fate allows, I will return again.”
Popy made her Dhallywood debut with Montazur Rahman Akbar’s ‘Coolie’, opposite Omar Sani. With her very first film, she created a nationwide stir with her acting and glamour. She then went on to star in numerous fan-favourite films such as ‘Dorodi Shontan’, ‘Ei Mon Tomake Dilam’, ‘Manush Manusher Jonno’, ‘Praner Priyotoma’, ‘Karagar’, ‘Dujonar’, ‘Bidroho Charidike’, ‘Bhalobashar Ghor’, ‘Jibon Manei Juddho’, ‘Bidrohi Shontan’, ‘Megher Kole Rodh’, ‘Ki Jadu Korila’ and ‘Bostir Rani Suriya’.
Popy has won the National Film Award three times, for Karagar, Megher Kole Rodh and ‘Gangajatra’.
