Indian company Adani Power has agreed to fully supply electricity from its 1,600-megawatt power plant to Bangladesh within the next few days. This comes after months of uncertainty and a partial suspension of supply over the past three months.

According to Reuters, while Adani Power has agreed to resume full electricity supply, it has rejected Bangladesh’s request for exemptions and tax benefits.

On October 31 last year, Adani Power, owned by Indian billionaire Gautam Adani, reduced its electricity supply to Bangladesh by half. At that time, Bangladesh was facing a foreign currency crisis, causing delays in bill payments. As a result, on November 1, one of the two equal-capacity units of the power plant was shut down.

However, at Bangladesh’s request and due to lower winter demand, the company continued to supply half of the usual electricity.

With summer approaching, electricity demand in Bangladesh is expected to rise significantly. In anticipation of this increased demand, and at the request of the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB), Adani Power has agreed to resume full supply of 1,600 megawatts within the next week.

However, Adani Power has refused to meet some additional demands from BPDB, such as exemptions and tax benefits, which could be worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Reuters reported that a virtual meeting between the two parties was held on Tuesday, and further discussions are expected to continue.

Referring to Adani Power, a Bangladeshi source told Reuters, “They do not want to offer any concessions—not even a single dollar. We have not received any exemptions. We want a mutual understanding, but they are strictly following the Power Purchase Agreement.”

BPDB Chairman Md. Reazul Karim declined to comment on the matter. However, he had earlier told Reuters that there were no major issues with Adani anymore and that full electricity supply would resume soon.

Currently, Bangladesh is attempting to pay Adani Power more than $85 million per month for electricity purchases.

Reuters reached out to an Adani Power spokesperson for comments on the issue, but no response was given.
