TDS Desk:
Advocate Ehsanul Haque Samaji has declined to assume the role of Public Prosecutor (PP) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court.
Just two days after his appointment, Samaji announced his decision not to take up the position.
Yesterday (28 August) BNP-affiliated lawyers staged a protest in front of the Dhaka Bar Association under the banner of general lawyers, demanding the cancellation of his appointment.
In a letter sent to the Solicitor Wing of the Law and Justice Division Thursday (29 August), Samaji cited his reasons for not accepting the role.
“Recently, I have been informed through various media outlets and other sources that I have been appointed to the position of Metropolitan Public Prosecutor by a letter issued from your [Solicitor Wing of the Law and Justice Division] office. I express my gratitude and thanks to all concerned, including the honourable adviser, for this appointment. However, as a regular member of the Dhaka Bar Association, I have been performing my professional duties with integrity and dedication for nearly 38 years, prioritising professional dignity. In the interest of maintaining this professional dignity and due to personal/family reasons, I sincerely regret my inability to assume the position of Metropolitan Public Prosecutor,” the letter stated.
Samaji further assured that he supports the reform of the state and will continue to provide legal services as needed.
Earlier, on 27 August, Ehsanul Haque Samaji was appointed as the new Public Prosecutor of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court.
However, after the news broke yesterday (28 August), BNP-affiliated lawyers staged a protest in front of the Dhaka Bar Association urging the interim government to revoke Samaji’s appointment immediately and warned that he would not be allowed to perform his duties if the demand was not met.
